Ravens and tell-tale hearts need a place to call home, too.
In Short
The Edgar Allen Poe House was Poe's house during his last year and a half in Philadelphia. In the years since 1844--when Poe moved out--any belongings that might have been owned by the Poe family during their time in the house vanished. The house was selected as the national memorial to Poe in 1980 and remains unfurnished, unspruced-up, and gloomy. Which serves as a fairly fitting tribute to one of America's creepiest writers.
The Extras
While living in Philadelphia, Poe wrote "The Purloined Letter," "The Cask of Amontillado," "The Masque of the Red Death" and "The Tell-Tale Heart," among other works.
Fun Facts
Edgar Allen Poe lived in Philadelphia from 1838-1844, when the city was bursting with publishing companies. His first published piece during his Philadelphia tenure? An introduction to "The Conchologist's First Book" for one of the city's science publishers.
